So to start with, find out who in the township has been known to be interested in working with young people. Maybe there is a youth groups in the township? Talk to the coordinators of the group; find out if they would welcome the service you want to offer. If you get their buy-in, they will help you to communicate with with everyone else, and to navigate within a community where you are not known well.
and young people are always interested in activities; gym etc, so you potentially have a captive audience:-)
And yes, they will listen. I see no reason they wouldn't if you speak to them FIRST about this, so that, even if it is your idea, it' very clear you have the community's best interest at heart.
Sounds like there's a lot of stuff that you can do to help your community. Maybe you could start by chatting with a couple of friends who can help you with teh project? Then you could call a community meeting ( if your project i big) or maybe talk to a nimber of people in your street, so you can all start discussiing what the community needs and how you can help. As for gym, you could start out doing a couple of classes at the local church, or school, or community centre. If you have a tape recorder with the music, and invite people to come, those in need will. And once they see what you are doing, they will invite others.
